The name Frankenstein conjurs images of demented, hunchbacked assistants, stone garrets and lightning-powered lab equipment. The novel has none of these.

Frankenstein may be the first SF novel. Like the best speculative fiction, it uses the fantastic as a backdrop for examining the human condition. At it's core, the novel isn't about the act of man creating life -- it's about the crime of creating life and failing to nurture it.
